New AC Refrigerants: What R-454B and R-32 Mean for Your Home

New air conditioners and heat pumps now use lower-impact refrigerants such as R-454B and R-32 in place of R-410A. Here’s what that means if you’re repairing or replacing.

What changed

Under federal EPA rules, new residential AC and heat pump equipment moved to refrigerants with a much lower global warming potential starting in 2025. Most manufacturers chose R-454B or R-32. These are classed as A2L refrigerants — mildly flammable — so equipment includes added safety features and technicians follow specific handling procedures.

If you have an R-410A system

You don’t need to replace it because of the change. Existing R-410A systems can still be repaired and recharged. If your system needs a major repair, compare the cost with a replacement estimate.

If you have an R-22 system

R-22 is no longer produced, so major refrigerant repairs on R-22 systems are usually poor value. See repair or replace? and the R-22 rambler replacement in West Valley City.

Mixing old and new equipment

R-454B and R-32 equipment is designed as a matched system. Pairing a new outdoor unit with an old indoor coil built for a different refrigerant is not a shortcut; plan to replace both.
