Repair or Replace Your Furnace or AC? A Utah Homeowner’s Guide

A practical way to decide whether to repair or replace a furnace or air conditioner, with Aegis Heating and Air’s typical Salt Lake County prices.

Start with the numbers

Typical Aegis prices: repairs $150–$900+, furnace replacement $3,000–$7,000, AC replacement $4,500–$9,500, complete system $7,500–$15,000, heat pump $5,500–$12,000. A diagnostic visit is $79–$129, and replacement estimates are free and in writing.

Usually repair when

  • The system is fairly young and the failed part is a common one (capacitor, igniter, flame sensor, inducer motor, drain)
  • The repair is small compared with replacement and the system has been reliable
  • The equipment is still under manufacturer parts warranty

Example: a West Jordan system only needed a thermostat set up correctly.

Usually replace when

  • The heat exchanger is cracked or the compressor has failed on an older system
  • Repairs are adding up year after year
  • The AC still uses R-22 refrigerant, which is no longer produced
  • The system was oversized from the start and never kept the house comfortable

If you replace, size it right

We run a Manual J load calculation on every install. Several of our case studies replaced oversized equipment with smaller, right-sized systems, such as this 1980s rambler in West Valley City and this two-story home in Taylorsville.

Help paying for it

Rocky Mountain Power Wattsmart and Enbridge Gas ThermWise (formerly Dominion Energy) rebates on qualifying equipment, and financing through Synchrony Bank and Service Finance Company, subject to credit approval. Financing details.

New installs carry a 24-month workmanship warranty and up to 10 years of manufacturer parts coverage (warranty). Call (385) 250-0687 for a free replacement estimate.

Frequently asked questions

Should I repair or replace a 15-year-old furnace?

It depends on what failed and how the system has run. A small common part is usually worth repairing; a cracked heat exchanger or repeated repairs usually point to replacement. Aegis gives free written replacement estimates so you can compare.

How much does it cost to replace a furnace in Utah?

Typical Aegis furnace replacement is $3,000 to $7,000.

My AC uses R-22. Should I replace it?

R-22 is no longer produced, so major refrigerant repairs on R-22 systems are usually poor value. Replacement is often the better choice.

The $5,000 rule of thumb

Multiply the age of the system in years by the repair quote. If the result is over $5,000, replacing usually makes more sense than repairing. Under $5,000, a repair is usually the better buy. It is a starting point, not a verdict.

System ageRepair quoteAge × costRule says
6 years$450$2,700Lean repair
10 years$400$4,000Lean repair
14 years$450$6,300Lean replace
17 years$900$15,300Lean replace

When the rule doesn’t fit

  • The part is still under manufacturer warranty, so only labor is due.
  • The system is badly oversized or undersized; a right-sized replacement fixes comfort, not just the breakdown.
  • You were already planning to switch, for example from a swamp cooler or AC to a heat pump.
  • Safety comes first: a cracked heat exchanger or a carbon monoxide problem is not a math question.

Aegis repairs carry a 12-month labor warranty; new installs carry a 24-month workmanship warranty. Repair prices are in writing before work starts, and installation estimates are free. See our price list.
