No Heat or No AC? What to Check First

Before you call, these quick, safe checks fix a surprising number of no-heat and no-cool calls. If you smell gas, leave the house first and call the gas utility.

1. Thermostat

  • Set to Heat or Cool, with the set point a few degrees past the room temperature
  • Replace the batteries if the screen is blank or dim

2. Power and switches

  • Check the breaker for the furnace or air handler and for the outdoor unit
  • Check the furnace service switch (it looks like a light switch on or near the furnace)
  • Make sure the furnace door is closed tightly — most furnaces won’t run with the door off

3. Filter

A badly clogged filter can make a furnace overheat and shut down or freeze an AC coil. Replace it if it’s gray and caked.

4. Condensate drain

High-efficiency furnaces and ACs make water. If the drain line or pump is blocked, a safety switch can stop the system. That’s exactly what happened on this Taylorsville no-heat call.

5. Frozen AC coil

If you see ice on the indoor coil or the copper line outside, turn the AC off and the fan on to let it thaw, and replace the filter. A dirty filter caused the freeze on this Magna emergency AC call.

When to stop and call

  • Gas smell or a carbon monoxide alarm — get everyone out first
  • Breaker trips again after you reset it
  • Burning smell, loud banging or grinding
  • Nothing above fixes it

Frequently asked questions

Why won’t my furnace turn on?

Check the thermostat settings and batteries, the breaker and furnace service switch, the furnace door, the filter and the condensate drain. If none of those fix it, call for service.

Why is my AC running but not cooling?

A dirty filter, a frozen coil or a tripped outdoor breaker are common causes. Turn the AC off and the fan on if you see ice, and replace the filter.
