Warranty Coverage
Every HVAC system we install carries two warranties: the manufacturer’s warranty on the equipment itself, and our own labor warranty on the workmanship of the installation. Both are documented in writing at job completion — not buried in fine print and not “we’ll figure it out if something breaks.” This page explains exactly what each covers, what it doesn’t, how long it lasts, and how to make a claim if you ever need to.
If you have questions about warranty coverage on a system we installed, call (385) 250-0687. We keep every customer’s warranty registration on file and can usually pull up your equipment’s coverage status while you’re on the phone.
Two Warranties, Working Together
Most HVAC system failures fall into one of two categories: equipment defects (a compressor that fails inside its rated life, a heat exchanger that cracks prematurely) and installation defects (a refrigerant leak at a brazed joint, a control board burned out by miswiring, a flue terminated against code). The two warranties cover the two categories:
- Manufacturer Warranty — covers parts that fail due to defects in materials or manufacturing. Issued by Trane, Carrier, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem, Mitsubishi, Bryant, Daikin, or whichever manufacturer made your equipment. Aegis is not the warrantor; the manufacturer is.
- Aegis Labor Warranty — covers workmanship on the installation itself. Issued by Aegis Heating and Air. Aegis is the warrantor.
When you have a warranty issue, you call us. We diagnose whether the issue is an equipment defect (manufacturer warranty), an installation defect (our labor warranty), or something outside warranty (normal wear, misuse, act of God). We handle the paperwork either way — you don’t deal directly with the manufacturer.
Manufacturer Warranty Coverage
Standard Manufacturer Warranty Terms
Manufacturer warranty terms vary by brand and equipment tier, but the typical residential HVAC equipment warranty looks like this:
- Compressor (AC and heat pump): [INSERT: typically 10 years on parts] when properly registered
- Heat exchanger (furnace): [INSERT: typically 20 years or lifetime] when properly registered
- Major functional parts (coils, motors, control boards, blower assemblies): [INSERT: typically 10 years] when properly registered
- All other parts: [INSERT: typically 5 years]
- Labor for warranty claims: Generally NOT covered by the manufacturer — labor for warranty work is typically the customer’s responsibility unless covered by the Aegis labor warranty or an extended warranty
Most warranties require registration within 60 to 90 days of installation to receive the full term. If equipment is not registered within the window, the warranty defaults to a shorter base term — typically 5 years instead of 10. We register every warranty on your behalf within one week of installation and send you the manufacturer’s confirmation for your records.
What Voids a Manufacturer Warranty
Manufacturer warranties have specific conditions that, if violated, can void coverage. The most common are:
- Installation by an unlicensed contractor. Most major manufacturers require professional installation by a licensed HVAC contractor. DIY installation or installation by an unlicensed person voids the warranty.
- Failure to perform required maintenance. Most warranties require documented annual professional maintenance. If a compressor fails in year 7 and you have no maintenance records, the manufacturer may deny the claim.
- Improper refrigerant handling. Adding refrigerant outside manufacturer specifications, mixing refrigerant types, or operating with an undercharge that damages the compressor voids the warranty on the affected component.
- Operation outside design conditions. Running a heat pump below its minimum design temperature without backup heat, or running a system in an environment with corrosive contaminants (saltwater, swimming pool chemicals, livestock environments) can void coverage.
- Modifications by another contractor. Changes to the equipment, refrigerant lines, or control wiring by an unauthorized party can void the manufacturer warranty.
- Transferring ownership without notification. Some manufacturer warranties transfer to subsequent homeowners; some do not. If you sell the home, contact us and we’ll help you understand transfer eligibility.
Extended Manufacturer Warranties
Most manufacturers offer extended warranty options at the time of installation — typically extending parts coverage from 10 years to 12 years and adding labor coverage for the same period. Pricing varies by equipment and tier, but extended warranties on a major install often run [INSERT: e.g., $400–$1,200] depending on coverage selected. We’ll discuss extended warranty options at the quote stage, with the actual cost and coverage terms in writing so you can decide based on real numbers.
Aegis Labor Warranty
New System Installation
Every new HVAC system installation by Aegis carries a written labor warranty:
- Coverage period: [INSERT: e.g., 2 years from the date of installation]
- What’s covered: Defects in our workmanship — including installation errors, improper torque on refrigerant connections, incorrect refrigerant charge at commissioning, miswiring of control circuits, improper venting installation, and similar issues directly attributable to our installation work
- What’s NOT covered: Equipment defects (those are manufacturer warranty), normal wear-and-tear items (filters, belts, batteries), damage caused by other parties, acts of God, or modifications made to the system by anyone other than Aegis after installation
If a system we installed fails due to a workmanship issue inside the labor warranty window, we return at no charge — no diagnostic fee, no labor charge, no parts charge for items we improperly installed. We complete the corrective work and document it in your customer file.
Major Repairs and Component Replacements
- Coverage period: [INSERT: e.g., 90 days from the date of repair]
- What’s covered: The specific repair we performed — if we replaced a blower motor and it fails within the warranty period due to a workmanship issue with the replacement (improperly torqued mounting hardware, miswired motor, incorrect capacitor sizing), we cover the corrective work
- What’s NOT covered: Unrelated failures elsewhere in the system, the part itself if it’s a manufacturer defect (those typically fall under the parts manufacturer’s warranty, which we’ll handle on your behalf), or subsequent failures caused by underlying issues we identified during the repair but you declined to have us address
Diagnostic Services
Diagnostic findings are warranted to be accurate at the time of the visit. If our diagnosis turns out to be incorrect — we missed the actual cause of a failure or recommended a repair that didn’t resolve the problem — we return at no additional diagnostic charge to reassess. This applies for [INSERT: e.g., 30 days] from the original diagnostic visit. Subsequent failures unrelated to the originally diagnosed issue are treated as separate service calls.
What’s Not Covered by Either Warranty
Neither the manufacturer warranty nor the Aegis labor warranty covers:
- Routine maintenance items — air filters, batteries in thermostats and CO detectors, drive belts, condensate pan tablets, humidifier pads, UV bulbs (which have rated lives requiring replacement)
- Damage caused by misuse, abuse, or neglect — for example, running a system with a filter so clogged it caused the heat exchanger to overheat, or repeatedly blocking return air vents
- Damage caused by failure to perform recommended maintenance — most warranties (manufacturer and ours) are conditional on annual professional maintenance
- Acts of God — flooding, lightning strikes, earthquakes, hail damage, wind damage, falling tree limbs, vehicle impact, vandalism
- Damage caused by other contractors, homeowners, or third parties — including changes to ductwork, electrical, gas lines, or controls by anyone other than Aegis after our installation
- Damage from power surges, voltage fluctuations, or electrical issues outside the HVAC system — unless a surge protector was installed as part of the original scope
- Cosmetic damage that doesn’t affect equipment performance
- Operation outside design conditions — for example, running a heat pump below its rated low-temperature capacity without backup heat
- Issues arising from changes to the building envelope — additions, renovations, or insulation changes that change the heat load on the system after installation
Maintenance Requirements to Keep Warranties Valid
Both the manufacturer warranty and the Aegis labor warranty require documented annual professional maintenance to remain valid for the full coverage period. This isn’t a technicality manufacturers invoke to deny claims — it’s how HVAC equipment is designed to be operated. Annual maintenance catches small issues (a stiff inducer motor, a marginal capacitor, a partially blocked condensate line, a refrigerant charge that’s drifted out of spec) before they become major component failures.
Recommended maintenance schedule:
- AC and heat pumps: Service in spring before cooling season — coil cleaning, refrigerant charge verification, electrical check, condensate drain treatment, capacitor test, airflow verification
- Furnaces and boilers: Service in fall before heating season — combustion analysis, draft test, heat exchanger inspection, gas pressure verification, ignition system inspection, filter replacement, blower compartment cleaning
- Heat pumps (year-round operation): Both spring and fall service
We keep maintenance records on every customer in our system. If you ever need to substantiate maintenance history for a warranty claim, we can produce documented service records on request.
If you’d prefer not to think about scheduling, our maintenance plans include twice-yearly tune-ups, priority emergency scheduling, and discounts on parts and repairs — all coordinated automatically. Call (385) 250-0687 for current pricing.
How to File a Warranty Claim
- Call us. (385) 250-0687. Tell us what the system is doing or not doing. Have your installation date and equipment serial number ready if possible — but if you don’t, we can look it up from our records.
- We schedule a diagnostic. Usually within 24–72 hours, faster for emergencies. There’s no charge for diagnostic visits on systems still under our labor warranty when the issue is determined to be a workmanship matter.
- We diagnose the issue. Real measurements at the equipment — static pressure, refrigerant charge, combustion analysis on gas equipment, electrical readings, visual inspection. We determine which category the failure falls into.
- We handle the paperwork. If the failure is covered by the manufacturer’s warranty, we file the claim with the manufacturer on your behalf, order the replacement part under warranty, and complete the repair. If the failure is covered by our labor warranty, we correct it at no charge. If the failure isn’t covered, we provide a written quote for the repair before performing any work.
- We complete the work and document it. Repair details, parts replaced (with serial numbers if applicable), and commissioning measurements are added to your customer file. Manufacturer warranty paperwork is filed with the manufacturer; copies sent to you for your records.
Most warranty repairs are completed within 1–7 days, depending on parts availability. For emergency failures during peak heating or cooling season (no-heat in winter, no-AC in extreme heat), we prioritize the diagnostic and use stocked parts from our truck whenever possible to restore operation immediately.
Workmanship Standards Behind the Warranty
The labor warranty only makes sense if the work is done to standards worth warrantying. Every Aegis install meets the same workmanship benchmarks regardless of project size:
- Refrigerant connections — flares torqued to manufacturer spec (½” SAE to 26 ft-lbs, ⅝” to 38 ft-lbs), nitrogen purge during brazing, system vacuum pulled to 500 microns and held before charging
- Lineset routing — straight, supported every 4 feet, sealed at both penetrations, no kinks or compression bends
- Ductwork — mastic-sealed at every joint (not tape-only), sized to manufacturer specifications, return air square inches verified against equipment requirements
- Gas line work — strapped every 6 feet on horizontal runs, pressure-tested at completion, performed by or directly supervised by our Utah Journeyman Plumber holder (Travis Hollings)
- Flue terminations — clearances to openable windows, fresh air intakes, and adjacent property lines verified against Utah Mechanical Code
- Combustion commissioning on gas equipment — CO ppm at high-fire and low-fire, draft pressure, manifold gas pressure, temperature rise across the heat exchanger all measured against manufacturer specification
- Electrical work — properly sized disconnect, surge protection where specified, low-voltage and line-voltage separated, all connections torqued to specification
- Documentation — commissioning measurements emailed to the customer at completion, manufacturer warranty registered within a week of install, photos of finished work in the customer file
This is the work we warranty. It’s also the work we expect — which is why callbacks on Aegis installs are rare.
Warranty Transfer When You Sell Your Home
Manufacturer warranty transfer policies vary by brand. Some manufacturers transfer the full remaining warranty period to the new homeowner; some convert to a shorter base warranty on transfer; some require a transfer fee. If you’re selling a home with an Aegis-installed system, call us and we’ll help you understand what transfers to the new owner and how to document it for the sale. The Aegis labor warranty does not automatically transfer to subsequent owners — it’s specific to the original purchaser — but in practice, we extend reasonable accommodation to subsequent owners on a case-by-case basis, particularly when the original install is recent and the issue is clearly a workmanship matter.
Disclaimers
The Aegis labor warranty is the express warranty offered by Aegis Heating and Air on installation workmanship. Except as expressly stated in this warranty and in any applicable manufacturer’s warranty, we make no other warranties, express or implied, including but not limited to implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose, to the extent permitted by Utah law. Some jurisdictions do not allow disclaimer of implied warranties — your statutory rights are not affected to the extent such disclaimers are not permitted.
Manufacturer warranties are issued by the equipment manufacturer (Trane, Carrier, Lennox, etc.), not by Aegis Heating and Air. Aegis is not a party to the manufacturer warranty and is not the warrantor. The manufacturer is solely responsible for honoring its warranty per its written terms. We assist customers in filing manufacturer warranty claims as a courtesy and as a function of our role as the installing contractor, but final decisions on coverage are made by the manufacturer.
Specific warranty terms applicable to your installation are documented in writing at the completion of your job. In the event of any conflict between this web page and the written warranty documentation provided at job completion, the written warranty documentation governs.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the warranty on a new HVAC system from Aegis? Two warranties apply: the manufacturer’s parts warranty (typically 10 years on major components, up to 20 years or lifetime on furnace heat exchangers, when registered within the required window) and the Aegis labor warranty on installation workmanship ([INSERT: e.g., 2 years on new system installations). Extended manufacturer warranties are available at additional cost and can extend both parts coverage and labor coverage on the equipment. Who do I call if my system has a warranty issue? Call Aegis Heating and Air at (385) 250-0687. We handle the diagnostic, determine whether the failure falls under the manufacturer warranty or our labor warranty, file the claim with the manufacturer if applicable, and complete the repair. You don’t need to contact the manufacturer directly — we manage the paperwork on your behalf. Does the manufacturer warranty cover labor for repairs? Generally no. Standard manufacturer warranties cover the cost of replacement parts but not the labor required to install them. Labor for warranty repairs is typically the customer’s responsibility unless covered by the Aegis labor warranty during its term, or unless an extended warranty with labor coverage was purchased at installation. We’ll always confirm coverage and quote any non-covered labor before performing work. Do I have to register my equipment myself? No. We register every manufacturer warranty on your behalf within one week of installation and send you the manufacturer’s registration confirmation for your records. This ensures you receive the full warranty term rather than the shorter base period that applies to unregistered equipment. Can skipping annual maintenance really void my warranty? Yes, in many cases. Most manufacturer warranties — and our labor warranty — require documented annual professional maintenance to remain valid. If a major component fails years into ownership and you can’t produce maintenance records, the manufacturer may deny the warranty claim on the grounds of inadequate maintenance. We keep maintenance records on every customer in our system so the documentation is always available if you need it. What happens if my equipment is still under warranty but I sold the home? Manufacturer warranty transfer rules vary by brand. Some transfer the full remaining warranty to the new owner; some convert to a shorter base warranty on transfer; some require a transfer fee paid by the new owner. Call us with the equipment details and the sale date — we’ll help you understand what transfers and how to document it for the new owner. The Aegis labor warranty is specific to the original purchaser, but we accommodate subsequent owners on a case-by-case basis. What if my system fails and it’s not covered by either warranty? We provide a written quote for the repair before performing any work. You decide whether to authorize. Even out-of-warranty repairs are line-itemed with no hidden charges, and we apply the same workmanship standards we apply to install work — which is why customers come back to us for repairs years after the original warranty expired.
